SEMA - Rack and device management
Most large enterprises today have a number of server rooms, data centres and wiring closets across multiple sites. The ability to manage these from a central, or indeed dispersed and remote locations brings a multitude of benefits to any organization. SEMA is an enterprise level rack management system that provides:

Device management:
- KVM via IP
- Analogue KVM
- Serial consol connectivity
- Virtual media
- Security
- Asset management
Power management:
- Power metering
- Outlet control
- Retrospective monitoring
- Thresholds and alerts
Rack management:
- Environmental monitoring
- U space management
- Floor space management
- Thresholds and alarms

| Multi site display shows user geographic location of data centres and comms rooms. Alerts relevant to specific sites are displayed on this screen | Zone display can be used to denote different areas of a data centre, different floors in a building or different buildings within a facility | Multi rack display shows cabinets as they are situated inside the data centre/server room. Cabinets can be colour coded for environmentals and security or can display available amps and U spaces | The elevated rack chart shows each device in the cabinet at its respective U space. Clicking on a device will initiate a KVM or consol session |
The SEMA solution is made up of a number of components including software and hardware.
SEMA

Synaptix Enterprise Management Application is a software package that contains the user dashboard and SQL database. It runs on a “wintel” server platform. All CPI KVM switches and PDU’s report back to the SEMA server. Remote users also connect to cabinets via the SEMA server.
Centerline
![]()
This consists of a 1u appliance and a 42u vertical connectivity column. The column has 42 slots for KVM/consol connection modules. In a 42u cabinet the column allows Keyboard, monitor, mouse USB and serial connectivity to each U space in the cabinet. This means that users can manage servers, storage and networking hardware through the same dashboard The modular approach enables a high degree of scalability.
CPI Intelligent PDU

SEMA allows for up to 4 intelligent PDU’s per cabinet. Via the SEMA dashboard users can monitor live power consumption of racks and devices in the enterprise. Users can also remotely switch PDU outlets on and off, set thresholds and a range of automated responses to specific events.
Centerbridge

This is a 1u appliance the incorporates an 8 way KVM switch and 8 way managed PDU. Both KVM and power management can be accessed via the SEMA server. Centerbridge is designed to include the management of remote racks/remote offices in the over all SEMA management domain.
Centerpoint

This provides the local access element to the system, either an 8 or 16 way KVM switch with integrated TFT drawer, keyboard and mouse. This allows local users to switch between Centerline units within a particular Zone.

SEMA in the enterprise

What are the customer benefits?
- Increased uptime – KVM and consol connectivity enables faster MTTR following application, OS and hardware problems
- Reduced engineering costs – Remote access eliminates the need for engineers to travel unless an item of hardware needs changing.
- Peace of mind – User defined thresholds, SNMP alerts and automated responses to specific events creates a safety net
- Reduced carbon foot print – Power metering and SQL reporting provide basic intelligence for energy saving decisions
- Capacity planning – Power metering, environmental monitoring, U space management and floor space management informs IT staff where head room exists for deploying new items of hardware saving time and increasing efficiency
- Pay as you grow, highly scalable solution minimises initial investment, customers need only to purchase server and user modules as they are required. The unique modular design enables this
- Greater cooling efficiency – The Centerline vertical column and 42u PDU drastically reduces the amount of cabling in the cabinet increasing airflow
