Cabinets and racks are often overlooked as simply a metal box in which to house systems and the choice of cabinet does not significantly affect operations within the server room or data centre. In reality the cabinet performs a number of vital functions:
Firstly the cabinet can be considered to be the end point of the cooling system and the ability of air to reach heat sources within the cabinet and remove it is vital to avoiding hardware failures (55% of all hardware failures are as a result of heat). Many hardware vendors have very specific requirements of a cabinet in order for them to honour warranty arrangements and IT managers should always consider this.
Secondly; the cabinet is the last line of physical security for hardware. All cabinets should be secure without compromising the cabinets ability to allow cooling to take place.
Thirdly; often hardware installation and maintenance will take place inside the cabinet, as such the has to be sufficient working space and access to the hardware for the cabinet not to hinder these activities.
